It’s time once again to have one of our staff members answer the all important 10 questions.
Today, it’s the turn of Phil!
Hi Phil, to start us off, what is your role within Jays Transport?
Driver Class 1. I started with Jays as a forklift driver on the early shift. I have moved through the company to become a Class 1 driver, which was funded internally by Jays.
What do your day-to-day duties include?
My trailer is usually loaded when I get into work, so I check my load, log where everything is on my manifest, strap the load down, complete my vehicle checks then leave the yard to complete my deliveries. I ring into the office once jobs are done to see if there are collections to brought back to base.
What is the best advice you’ve ever received?
I have been given loads of great advice over the years by people a lot smarter than me, but one that sticks in my mind – As I was joining the army I had to take the oath for queen and country with a royal Irish officer, he said to me as I enter training, don’t take what is said to me personally, it’s being said to get a reaction or apply pressure, it’s not meant as a personal insult…that served me very well.
What was your first job?
First job from school was a landscape gardener. I enjoyed it, but didn’t want to spend my life doing it.
What three items would you take with you to a deserted island?
The wife for entertainment, rope for the wife and shelter building, and a knife for everything else.
Tell us something ‘interesting’ people may not know about you.
In 1988 for 10 minutes, I was the fastest schoolboy in Cheshire. I lost in the final, but for the 10 minutes between the semi-final and the final, I was the fastest schoolboy in Cheshire!
What did you want to grow up to be when you were a kid?
When I was a child, we didn’t have wheelie bins, so my dad used to pull a gut carrying the bins down the drive. The bin men would turn up – huge lumps they seemed to be, with a cigarette hanging out the side of their mouths and a bin in in each hand, throwing the rubbish into the truck, then jumping on the back of the truck as it moved onto the next street. Seeing these blokes hanging of the back of a truck was the coolest thing I had ever seen, so I guess a bin man!
What do you do in your spare time?
When I’m not working, I usually do fitness early morning and then the evening is family time. We get down to Bude as often as possible.
Can you speak more than one language?
Nope, just English.
Are you a coffee or tea person?
Coffee in the morning but tea all day!
That’s our Ten From Phil but if you’d like to read some more you could head to our news section or why not check out these previous ‘Tens From…’
