Sharing the Road Safely: Winter Tips for Car Drivers Around Lorries

At Jays Transport, safety is our top priority, we share the road with countless cars every day. Winter weather conditions can introduce additional challenges for all drivers, so we want to take this opportunity to offer some tips on how car drivers can stay safe when sharing the road with large lorries in winter.

Increased Stopping Distances

  • Be aware that large lorries, like those in our fleet, require significantly longer stopping distances than cars, especially on wet, icy or snowy roads.
  • Maintain a safe following distance: Always leave ample space between your car and the lorry in front of you. Double the distance you normally would in clear weather conditions.
  • Avoid sudden braking: Anticipate the lorry’s movements and brake gently to avoid a collision.

Reduced Visibility

  • During winter storms, visibility can be significantly reduced.
  • Use your headlights appropriately: Turn on your headlights in low-visibility conditions, even during the middle of the day.
  • Use your indicators to ensure that everyone knows where you intend on going.
  • Be aware of lorry blind spots: Large lorries have significant blind spots, particularly on the sides and directly behind the vehicle. Avoid lingering in these areas.

Hazardous Manoeuvres

  • Be patient and avoid overtaking lorries when road conditions are poor.
  • Give lorries plenty of space when they are turning: Lorries require a wider turning circle than cars, so be prepared to slow down or stop to allow them to manoeuvre safely.

Winter Essentials

  • Be prepared for the unexpected. Always carry an emergency kit in your car that includes warm clothes, a blanket, a torch, a phone charger, and non-perishable food and water.
  • Check weather conditions before your journey: Plan your route accordingly and allow extra time if necessary.

By following these tips and staying alert, car drivers can share the road safely with lorries throughout the winter season.

At Jays Transport, we are committed to the safety of all road users. Our drivers undergo rigorous training in safe driving practices, particularly in winter conditions.
